We’ve all been there before where we order take out for 3 and eat it all in one sitting. Even when we tell ourselves we’re going to portion it out and yada yada yada. It doesn’t happen. We grab the take out bag and dump it on a plate. Throwing the takeout menu and any of the evidence to the bottom of the trash can.
Been there and it sucks. So what if we could learn to make one simple fried rice recipe that we actually feel good about. No guilt, second thoughts, or negative vibes. Because when we take the time to make and prepare our food. It is a way of being kind to ourselves.
And yes there was a time not too long ago where I didn’t know how to cook to save my life. So this recipe is simple. Just like they say in the movie Ratatouille, “Anyone can cook.” That means you too.
INGREDIENTS
To make an outstanding fried rice dish, the ingredients are where it’s at. Fresh ingredients that is. Living in Bali, Indonesia, we’ve experimented A LOT with recipes and had kind locals share their secrets and knowledge.
I’ve broken it down to:
- White rice
- Veggies
- Onion
- Garlic
- Sesame Oil
The veggies are fresh and thinly sliced. You can use frozen veggies if you want to save time chopping though. To be honest, fresh veggies are what enhance this dish. The sesame oil is a must that you can’t substitute out. The sesame oil is what gives this simple fried rice recipe its authentic flavor.
You can add in an egg, chicken, or whatever you prefer. The veggies and rice taste outstanding as is.
HOW TO MAKE
Slice and prepare your veggies. I like to use carrots, zucchini, bell peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, sugar snap peas / peas, onion, and garlic. The carrots and zucchini are julienned which means cut into thin strips. This allows the veggies to sauté best and evenly distribute throughout the fried rice recipe.
Preheat a large pan and add in 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, onions, and garlic. Sauté for 2-3 minutes. Then add in all of the veggies.
After adding the veggies to the pan add 1 more tablespoon of sesame oil to the pan and sauté until the veggies have softened.
Then, add in the cooked rice and give it a few stirs cooking in the pan together for 5-7 minutes. This helps the rice pick up the incredible sesame flavor.
Place in a bowl and it’s dinner time my friend! You can increase the spice level by adding a jalapeño or red chili.
