Wondering how to make those delicious smoothie bowls all over instagram? There is a little magic to making smoothie bowls and once you know this little trick, you’ll be making them like a pro. Because smoothie bowls are almost too simple to post about.
What is a smoothie bowl?
A smoothie bowl is just like a smoothie yet has a thicker consistency. For smoothie bowls, you’ll still throw all of your ingredients into a blender. The only difference is you’ll want to grab a spoon to enjoy your smoothie bowl. You won’t be drinking your smoothie which means you can savour your smoothie bowl even longer.
Smoothie Bowl Ingredients
There are so many smoothie bowl recipe options out there. Let’s keep it simple with the following 4 ingredients:
- Frozen bananas
- Frozen berries
- Liquid (any plant based milk)
- Vanilla extract
A little trick on how to make an irresistible smoothie bowl is to use frozen bananas and minimal liquid.
The frozen bananas are the base and heart of this smoothie bowl. Frozen bananas give the smoothie bowl a cool and creamy consistency. As I’ve shared in my recipes for ripe bananas video, you want to buy a big bunch of bananas and let them ripen for 3-4 days before placing them in the freezer. Make sure you chop each banana into 4 small pieces, so you know how many pieces make up one banana.
You can use any berries you have on hand. I like to use frozen berries as it helps create the smoothie’s thick texture.
How to Make a Smoothie Bowl
In the past, I would follow smoothie recipes and precisely measure each ingredient only to end up with a soup like smoothie. It wasn’t thick enough. I’ve learned that I need to use less liquid in smoothie bowls.
To make your smoothie bowl, you’ll add all of the ingredients to a blender and blend on low. The slow-blending really does make a difference on the smoothie’s texture. Depending on your blender, you may need to add a little more liquid to achieve your desired consistency.
Transfer the smoothie to a bowl.
Then for the fun part, add some toppings. You can top your smoothie bowl with sliced fresh fruit, homemade granola, shredded coconut flakes, nut butter or seeds. Experiment and find what works best for you.
