Friends, this is a classic but oh so delicious hummus recipe with tahini that can quickly become a favorite in your home. You see with so many recipes out there how do you choose which one to make? And why should you use tahini?
Why Tahini
I’ve tried it all – recipes with and without tahini. I’ve used other substitutes and you know what. They don’t cut it.
Tahini is one of the main ingredients in hummus along with chickpeas, olive oil, and lemon. A hummus recipe with tahini is what gives the dish it’s rich and savory flavor. This hummus recipe with tahini goes from bland and uninspiring to something you desire!
And without a doubt the tahini is what gives this hummus recipe its creamy flavor. The chickpeas can have a chunky texture by themselves. But when we add tahini we get a brilliantly balanced dish.
Fresh Ingredients
First up, fresh ingredients are oh so important in creating the flavor in this hummus recipe with tahini. If you’re like me, you might not even be able to count the number of times you’ve grabbed a big tub of hummus from the store. It’s a quick and easy option. Yet we can make this snack even healthier and cheaper by making it a home.
Chickpeas
This is the base of this hummus recipe with tahini. Chickpeas are also called garbanzo beans. You can use canned chickpeas or cook dried chickpeas. I typically like to soak my dried chickpeas the night before and then cook them in a stove pot.
Soaking is a good habit that helps reduce the cooking time and improves our digestion. Remember that soaking for anytime is better than not at all.
Tahini
Oh how you may grow to love this versatile ingredient! It is made from sesame seeds, high in minerals and vitamins, and gives off a slightly nutty flavor.
Lemon
A squeeze of lemon adds even more fresh flavor to this hummus recipe with tahini. Store bought lemon juice will not have the same effect. If you have the option, opt for freshly squeezed lemons every time. Start out small when adding lemon because you can always add more to this hummus recipe with tahini.
Garlic
This hummus recipe with tahini would not be complete without garlic. There is nothing that compares. We love the strong but not overpowering flavor of garlic. And pureed together with all of the ingredients tastes divine!
Olive Oil
Olive oil creates the rich and luxurious texture of this hummus recipe with tahini! We love it so much that we sprinkle a little more on top right before serving adding a sharp look to our hummus.
Chili
There are so many recipes out there. To add your own unique twist on them, you can add a little paprika powder and chili / jalapeno. It gives this dish the proper little kick.
How to Make
We recommend using dried chickpeas and soaking them the night before. Canned chickpeas work well in this recipe too. Rinse and cook the dried chickpeas on the stove. Note you will see some of the chickpea skins fall off. That is okay.
I’ve taken the skins off before but this is a little too time consuming. So I prefer to keep the skins on. You will still get a fabulous dish with skins intact.
Add all your ingredients in a food processor or blender and pulse. For hummus, I prefer a food processor as the chickpeas can be a little chunky.
Test taste the hummus to see if you need more of an ingredient. With the chickpeas and tahini, the mixture may be thick. For this, add a little more water to get a better consistency.
When finished, sprinkle extra paprika, salt, and drizzle olive oil on top. Serve with sliced carrots or pita bread.
The great thing about this hummus recipe with tahini is that you can add more of the ingredients that you love. If you’re a spice lover, kick up the paprika powder and jalapeno. If you love the fresh lemon, add more of it.
How to Store
This hummus recipe with tahini can be kept in the fridge for 7 days. Just make sure to use an airtight container.
This hummus recipe with tahini is a great appetizer for parties and social gatherings. I know that if I bring a healthy dish to share, I’ll have a healthy option no matter what. And this hummus recipe with tahini is always a hit with family and friends!
